Nelson Makamo – A Driving Force Of Inspiration

World-renowned South African visual artist, Nelson Makamo, whose work has been celebrated in galleries across the globe, has recently created probably one of his most personal pieces yet. This daring artist decorated his 2021 Porsche 911 in an extraordinarily unique way, with his art.

Mokamo, 39 years of age, was born and raised in rural Modimolle, Limpopo and it has always been a childhood dream of his to own a Porsche. The artist made it his life mission to one day achieve this personal goal. After years of hard work and dedication Mokamo ordered his Jet Black Metallic 911 Carrera Coupé and in collaboration with the automaker started the process of turning his car into a moving work of art.

Hand painting a number of components and panels of his brand new 911 at his studio and then handing them over to the team at Porsche Centre Johannesburg for final fitting. The car components included the rear bumper, door panel inserts and handles, front seat mouldings, dash panel inserts, the parking brake console, and side mirror covers.

The artwork on the car components includes personal elements, such as the inscription “Mma” on the left side door panel that mean “mother” in Makamo’s native language. This marking signifies the love and support his mother has always given him and also marks the first time Makamo mentions his mother in his work, making it a truly emotional and personal moment for Mokamo.

Makamo says: “I always knew I was going to own a Porsche. I just never knew that my relationship with the brand would start this way – and it’s only the beginning.”
